Summer in NYC Garment District
Atualizado: 5 de Jul de 2019
Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, NYC, the Garment District is home to most of the city's fashion headquarters and showrooms. Relatively, it is also a neighborhood filled with a diverse mix of restaurants and rooftop bars with beautiful city views—making it one of New York City's must-see destination for both locals and travelers during the summer season. Thus, I explored the Garment District to curate a quick guide for anyone interested in exploring some of the amazing venues the neighborhood has to offer. Below are a few reasons (& places) I love the Garment District.
Rag Trader/Bo Peep
A former garment factory that turned into a restaurant & bar, the Rag Trader is an industrial venue with high ceilings and a wide space that features elevated American cuisine, craft cocktails & wine. From exposed brick wall and the "Beauty Bar" (a display cabinet with mannequins and vogue magazines) in the main dining room, to the "Tailor's Parlor" and the "Hat Box" (vintage hat boxes and sewing machines) in the back, and garment-inspired cocktail drinks at Bo Peep downstairs (a subterranean cocktail bar with live piano), this venue represent everything the Garment District a.k.a. Fashion district is. Overall The Rag Trader is aesthetically pleasing, with each room perfect for instagrammable pictures.
While making a reservation through OpenTable, I was given an option to choose an occasion. Seeing that my birthday and graduation passed just a few weeks prior (during Ramadan), I decided to select the "celebration" option. When my party (of 3) and I arrived, we got seated immediately. Furthermore, our waiter was attentive and gave us great recommendations based on our conversations. To start, we ordered shareable Mac N' Cheese and Waffle Sweet Potato Fries for the table. & let me tell you something about the sweet potato fries...BOMB.com! Suen (my best friend) and I were fighting about who will eat the last piece. We were about to make a second order of the waffle fries when our main meal arrived, so we decided not to. Nonetheless, I would come back to this place just for those fries 😋
On the table, we had one order of Crispy Skin Salmon (Black Rice, Green Coconut Curry, Crispy Ginger, Cashew), two orders of Hanger Steak Frites (Grilled Scallion Chermoula, Fries), and one order of Cheeseburger (Certified Angus Beef, Sesame Bun, Cheddar, Lettuce, Onion, Secret Sauce, Fries). Although the salmon was my order, it was the burger that caught my eyes (the burger's juiciness had my inner fat self's mouth watering). Anyways, "eat salmon" they said, "salmon is healthy" they said 😂
So there I was, enjoying my crispy (and healthy) salmon. Throughout our time there our waiter, and at some point I believe the manager, checked up on our table making sure everything was okay—which it was. I absolutely loved the ambience, the decor, and the hospitality. After our meal, I (of course) requested to see the dessert menu and ordered three gelato scoops. Unknown to me, the waiter came out with a slice of cake with a lit candle (alongside my gelato) wishing me "congratulations". My party was confused, but I instantly realized it was because of the option I chose while making the reservation. The cake was "on the house" and although it caught us all by surprised, I was extremely delighted by it. Gestures like that was another reason why I absolutely loved the venue. I definitely recommend !

This is only one of MANY venues in the NYC Garment District. Located centrally, it is convenient to navigate to/and from other places (be it restaurants, entertainments, rooftops, shopping). With the accessibility of the NY subway, you can enjoy the Garment District and what it offers any time this summer. You can start your day strolling through the Fashion Walk of Fame where there are plaques dedicated to New York's top designers; have lunch at Upside Pizza (598 8th Ave, New York) where they serve pizza with naturally leavened dough in a colorful setting; explore the architectural and historical treasure trove that is the Garment District; when you have worked up an appetite, dine at the Rag Trader (above) or at Clinton Hall 36 where numerous crafts on tap & creative gastropub food is offered; and/or visit one of the rooftops such as Castell Rooftop Lounge (260 W 40th St, New York) or Elsie Rooftop (1412 Broadway, New York) to unwind with cocktails looking over beautiful and scenic city views after a long day...The options are endless!! Go out and explore the neighborhood, there is plenty to see and do. For even more info on all things Garment District NYC, visit: @garmentdistrictnyc #GarmentDistrict #NYC #ad #summer
